Investigations of seed and fiber samples from 4 upland cotton cultivars planted in 1973 cotton variety regional trials at 17 locations to understand yield, seed quality and fiber quality. Correlation coefficients between eight agronomic and quality parameters were calculated. No significant correlation was found between yield and oil content or yield and protein content. Three of the four cultivars showed a positive correlation between oil content and fiber maturity and a negative correlation between oil content and immature seed percentage. As for the protein, the negative correlation with fiber maturity is the most significant. The oil content of the Sagitt 4789A is highly positively correlated with the index finger. Love word cotton 1517-70 protein and fiber maturity is highly negative correlation. Both varieties showed a positive correlation between yield and fiber strength. We now discuss the feasibility of using airflow fouling meter readings (fiber maturity) as an indicator of cottonseed oil content in different producing areas.
