在广东省汕头市郊桑浦山南麓,一个占地一千三百多.亩的建筑群正在全面施工。朝南一座先期完工的大门楼,左侧挂着叶剑英同志题写的“汕头大学”匾额,右侧镶着以金凤花、凤凰、书本和海浪组成图案的汕头大学校徽。这就是香港知名人士、长江实业<集团)有限公司董事长李嘉诚先生捐资兴建的汕头大学。继爱国华侨领袖陈嘉庚先生早年独资创办厦门大学之后,象李嘉诚这样捐赠港币一亿七千万元兴建大学,在我国建国以来还是第一次。
