On April 14, 1994, two U.S. Air Force F-15C fighters mistakenly dropped two of their UH-60 helicopters during a patrol flight in the north of Iraq. One of the two air-to-air missiles used by the attack was the AIM-120A advanced medium-range air-to-air missile. Origin and Development As early as 1975, the United States Air Force and the Navy first proposed the development of an advanced medium-range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM). By 1979, the Air and Navy formed a joint design engineering office and formally formulated the AIM-120A Development Plan , Becoming one of the key projects in the U.S. Defense Department's arms development plan. Beginning in early 1979, the missile verification phase of the AIM-120A program was implemented. Hughes Aircraft Corporation and Raytheon from the United States
