John Thomson (1837-1921) was born in Edinburgh, England, where he worked as an apprentice at the Optical Instrument Factory and later joined his brother in the Far East in 1862. He lived in the Far East for more than ten years and established his own portrait studio in Singapore. One of the most famous is his trip to Cambodia, which made him the first man to photograph Angkor Wat. Thomson returned to London after his public photos, and then he went to China, where he lived for five years. The records of his trip to the Far East have led him to publish several books successively, including “Ancient Ruins of Cambodia”, “Illustrated Chinese and Chinese People”, “Strait of Malacca” and “Indochina and China.” Returning to London once again, he focused his attention on the life of the poor in the city, and in 1877 created the first collection of social documentaries, one of which was London’s street life.
