兽医专业的选择 王永坤于1935年10月出生于东南沿海福建省云霄县县城,祖父是县较有名的中医,祖母每年饲养数批架子猪和数头肥猪。少年的他曾饲养过许多鸽子、鸡、鸭、鹅、兔等动物,培养喜爱动物,但因疫病常造成动物发病死亡,因此在少年时期已产生准备研究扑灭动物病的思想。1956年高中毕业报考高校时,他以第一志愿第一学校被苏北农学院畜牧兽医系兽医专业录取。毕业前,1960年3月方定一教授因科学研究需要几位四年级学生到实验室协助科研工作,经4个月工作,方定一教授要他在微生物组任教,成为著名兽医微生物学专家方定一教授的助手,对方老的学识,人品和治学精神推崇备至。这个精干的小个子学生,平时总是跟随方教授左右,不耻下问,向老师虚心教授。在教学科研上成为方教授的得力助手。生活上,给老师无微不至地关心照感。
