Objective: To investigate the changes of plasma endothelin (ET) and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) in neonates with asphyxia. Methods: Twenty-four neonates with full-term neonatal asphyxia and 18 newborns with normal controls were enrolled. Plasma ET-1 and CGRP concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay on day 1 and day 5 after birth. Results: The levels of plasma ET-1 and CGRP in children with asphyxia on the first day after birth were significantly higher than those in the control group. The level of ET-1 and CGRP on the 5th day after birth significantly decreased in both groups. The experimental group on the first day 1,5 plasma ET 1 and CGRP was positively correlated. Conclusion: Increased ET production in neonatal asphyxia may play a role in damaging the body. Elevated CGRP may be the mechanism of self-protection of the body.
