In the last two decades, significant progress has been made in understanding the detailed mechanisms of deformation due to the use of dislocation erosion techniques in studying materials with rock salt structures, especially MgO and LiF. Many of its results can be used for other substances having a simple structure such as metals and substances belonging to the fluorite-type structure.
