Thermal recovery includes steam flooding, steam stimulation, auxiliary gravity steam flooding, burning oil layer, electric heating and oil recovery. Numerical simulation of thermal recovery is an integral part of thermal recovery development scheme design. In the past 10 years, commercial simulators were generally applied. In the last 10 years, the new model is less and more work is to correct and improve the existing problem solution to improve the simulator’s efficiency. This article discusses several recent advances in numerical simulation of thermal recovery, such as grid encryption, grid orientation, the effect of temperature on relative permeability, mathematical models, and solution methods. The discussion of numerical simulations helps to understand the problems encountered in thermal recovery modeling and is beneficial to the use and development of simulators
