明朝嘉靖三十年(公元1552年),时任兵部员外郎,家住宣武门外达智桥的杨继盛(字仲芳,号椒山)在朝堂之上严词弹劾奸相严嵩,反被严嵩诬陷。下得朝来,内心苦闷,饥肠辘辘,逶迤来至菜市口米市胡同,忽闻香气四溢,见一小店便推门而入,店堂不大,却干净优雅,宾客满堂,遂捡席而坐,点了烤鸭与些许酒菜,大快朵颐,把心中烦闷与不快早抛掷九霄云外。有人认出他是爱国名臣良将,便报与店主。店主倍感荣幸,亲自端鸭斟酒,与之攀谈起来。谈话间,杨继盛得知此店人呼“便宜坊”,但尚无人题匾,又见店主待客周到,菜品质好量足,感叹道:“果然方便宜人,物超所值!”遂命店家取来笔墨,挥毫写下“便宜坊”三个笔力遒劲的大字,众客皆呼:“好!”。不久,一块黑底金字的牌匾悬挂于门首,便宜坊由此声名远播。
