Rise on the ruins The German aerospace industry was once the most feared aircraft and missile manufacturing machine in the world. Nazi Germany’s aircraft production before the Second World War (8295 aircraft/1939) surpassed that of the United Kingdom and was three times that of France. During the entire World War II, a total of 118,000 aircraft were produced, including the best Me-262 jets and V-1 and V-2 missiles. After the war, the German aviation industry was destroyed and dismembered. A large number of machinery and equipment were pulled into the Soviet Union. A large number of engineers and technicians including rocket designer von Braun were captured in the United States and Britain. In the Berlin siege of 1947, the American transport plane lifted the hunger of the West Berliners and the German aircraft manufacturing industry, which has made Germans proud, has disappeared from the ruins. In 1946, the national income of Germany was less than one-third of that in 1939. In 1950, the GDP of the Federal Republic of Germany was equivalent to the decline of the United Kingdom.
