Preclinical studies have shown that WHI-07 is a safe, prophylactic contraceptive that is a novel zidovudine arylphosphate derivative. Dr D’Cruz pointed out that currently a large number of microbicides that combine the dual benefits of anionic polymers and detergents are being used clinically to inhibit the sexual transmission of HIV-1.
