High incidence of hypertension, about 1/4 of the Americans suffer from the disease. The disease is the main cause of stroke, but also the most dangerous factor of heart disease. A controversial new theory of hypertension in an article in Science magazine is that too much sodium can raise blood pressure in some people prone to high blood pressure. Another article in Nature notes that it was not clear beforehand that a chemical in the body plays an important role in blood pressure regulation. The article in Science magazine is based on a diet analysis of 10,000 Americans based on David Mc Carron, Oregon director of hypertension programs at Oregon Health Sciences University, and colleagues. The results show that too little calcium than sodium is more likely to cause high blood pressure.
