1992年,王宁利在中山医科大学获得了医学博士学位。那时,他不停地思考着同一个问题:为什么老是外国医学专家到我们这里来交流,而中国人不能在国际舞台上展示风采?一种对更高层面交流的追求,使他产生了想要出去看一看的冲动——到美国做博士后研究,他不但要成为国内学者,而且要做一名国际学者。他想站在国际演讲台上,用一口带着家乡口音的流利英文,做一回科学演讲。多年以后,他的梦想终于成真。
