In 1906, Tileston reported several cases of “esophageal peptic ulcer disease.” He noticed that the mucosa around the ulcer was very similar to that seen in the normal stomach. Most scholars believe that the organ that lines the columnar epithelium is not the esophagus but the tubular segment of the stomach. Norman Barrett thinks it is an esophageal segment lined with a columnar epithelium. The esophageal lining of the columnar epithelium is called Barrett’s esophagus (BE). The naked eye, see BE has deep glands, pits and villi. Barrett’s mucous membranes are classified into three types: The gastric mucosa of the gastric cardiae looks like a gastric mucosa, but often there are distorted glands, edema, and chronic inflammation.
