It has been known in the past that the mean concentration at any other point can be determined given the average concentration of suspended sediment at any point in a wide and straight river. This was originally demonstrated by the method developed by O’Brien (see bibliography) in a study of the turbulence in the atmosphere of Schmidt. The results obtained by this method are consistent with those actually observed in rivers and channels and have been demonstrated by Christiansen and Richardsen. Artificial turbulence has been checked by Hurst and Rouse. The relationship is the following general form:
