Objective: To investigate the role of telomerase in the development of gastric cancer and its clinical significance by detecting the telomerase activity in gastric cancer and precancerous lesions. Methods: The telomerase activity of 40 cases of gastric cancer and 18 cases of precancerous lesions (including 10 cases of chronic atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia and 8 cases of atypical hyperplasia) were detected by SP immunohistochemistry. Results: The positive rates of telomerase in gastric cancer and precancerous lesions were 92.5% (37/40) and 33.3% (6/18), respectively. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P <0.05). There was no significant correlation between telomerase activation and gastric cancer differentiation, pathological stage and lymph node metastasis (P> 0.05). Conclusion: The expression of telomerase activity is closely related to the occurrence of gastric cancer. The detection of telomerase activity by immunohistochemistry may serve as a reference index for the early diagnosis of gastric cancer, and the positive cases should be followed up.
