事情虽然已经过去了八年,但是,很多人仍会记得北京人民艺术剧院来日演出的《茶馆》的结尾的场面,三个老人为他们自己举行了悼念仪式,他们撤着纸钱,在屋里转了一圈之后,有两个老人悄然辞去,只剩下主人公王掌柜在学生游行的口号声中,手握着自己的腰带,默默地走进了内室……这时屋内的光渐渐暗下去,户外的光渐渐亮起来。很显然,主人公就这样结束了自己的一生。全场观众受到了极大的震憾,感情上所受到的冲击久久不能忘去。但在老舍先生的原作里的结尾本来不是以上这样,它还有一个场面:在两个老人走出后,王掌柜已经进了内室,这时又从门外进了两个女招待,宪兵队军官和人贩子(小刘麻子)也进到茶馆来,正当他们之间展开了一场霸占茶馆的闹剧时,听说茶馆老掌柜已自缢身亡,在宪兵军官‘好极了,好极了’的狂叫声中幕闭……。夏淳导演不太满意这个结尾,认为显得多余。于是出现了现在这个给人留下深刻印象的十分精采的结尾。《茶馆》开始是由北京人民艺术剧院的副院长兼总导演焦菊隐先生与夏淳共同导演的。但是由于这位中国著名的老艺术家焦菊隐先生过早去世,一九七八年第三次排演《茶馆》的担子,就落在了夏淳的肩上了。原来《茶馆》就已经蜚誉北京的剧坛,这次又经过夏淳导演的精心加工整理,使之越来越博得好评。终于首次作为中国现代戏剧的代表作,实现了出访国外的理想。一九八○年访问了西德、法国、瑞士,一九八三年访问日本,一九八六年又在香港、加拿大、新加坡进行了访问演出。于一九八七年他又被邀赴新加坡讲学并导演了曹禺名著《雷雨》,获得了极大的成功。作为著名导演艺术家的夏淳也名传国外了。
