The microstructure of rare earth catalytic ion nitriding layer was studied by transmission electron microscope. The results show that the rare earths infiltration can refine the γ phase grains and increase the grain boundary defects. The addition of rare earths increases the ion bombardment effect, which can cause the crystal defects such as vacancies, dislocation loops and stacking fault in γ phase Increase in the number of the surface 0.08mm thick diffusion layer ferrite produced high density dislocations.
