In the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), a general named Wu Zixu and his family had been serving the State of Chu for generations. However, Lord Ping of the State of Chu, believed in others’ slanderous talks and killed Wu Zixu’s father Wu She. In order to eliminate the threat from Wu’s family, he sent orders to get Wu Zixu and his brother back from the battlefield. Wu Zixu’s brother Wu Shangming decided to come back even though he knew he would die. However, Wu Zixu did not want to lose his life like this. He endured a lot of pain and overcame great difficulties before finally leaving the State of Chu for the State of Wu.
After spending ten years in the State of Wu, Wu Zixu became the commanding general of Wu’s army. He led his army and overran the capital of the State of Chu. At that time, Lord Ping had died. Wu Zixu broke up his tomb, dragged out his coffin and whipped his body for three hundred times. In addition, he ordered his men to search for Lord Ping’s son Lord Zhao.
Wu Zixu’s old friend Shen Baoxu wrote to him, blaming him for his extremely malevolent vengeance. Wu Zixu wrote back: “I have only a little time left in my life, just like a walker who found that the sun was setting but he still had a long way to go. Out of anxiety and desperation, I did something unreasonable.”
