宋神宗熙宁五年（1072）六月初四日,大沙门明教大师契嵩,在杭州灵隐寺化寂,享年六十六岁。四天之后,僧众按照佛家的丧葬规矩,将契嵩的遗体火化。火化后,大家惊奇地发现,竟有六根骨头烧不坏,而且三块顶骨都各结出了舍利子。那舍利红白相间,晶莹剔透,象三粒大豆子。据佛教传说,舍利是难得的宝物,要不是大师生前佛法高超,是绝不会有的。僧徒们在火堆边继续寻找,看看还有什么遗物。一个和尚忽然发现,大师生前常用的木数珠,竟也完好无损;忽然,另一位和尚惊喜地大叫道:“大师的舌头！舌头还在！” 大家立刻围了上来。 只见大师的那根舌头,象生了锈的铁块似的,黑里透朱,坚硬挺拔,格外沉重。 “一定是大师生前好辩,所以三寸舌头不坏。”僧人们议论纷纷,都这样说。 消息立刻传了出去,而且一传十,十传百,不免越传越神。杭州各地的僧俗大
Song Shenzong Xining five years (1072) on the fourth day of June, Dashamen Mingjiao Master Song, in Hangzhou Lingyin Temple silence, at the age of sixty-six.
