明代中叶,王阳明心学在江西大为传播。王阳明在贵州龙场驿悟良知,于正德年间来江西,知庐陵县,后巡抚南赣,在赣州开始讲致良知之学。未久破宸濠,讲学白鹿书院,从游者甚众。在赣州时,士子初次求见者,先以高弟子教之,然后与之交谈,他的学说也在质疑问难中发展。正如黄德良所说:“阳明学问,初亦未成片段,因从游者众,夹持起,歇不得,所以成就如此。”在王阳明影响下,形成江右王门学者群体,屹然成为明代心学一大支流,著名者有二十七人。其中如刘两峰,师从他的又有十七人,皆有成就。黄宗羲在《明儒学案》中列江右王学九个学案,可见一时阵容之盛。
