TAIYUAN IS a historically famous city in North China. Since 1949 it has become a major city in the Middle West Area, where great change has taken plaee.Taiyuan, as a capital of Shanxi, is a heart of politics, economy, culture, science & technology and information in Shanxi, with a total area of 6988 square km and a population of 2. 96 million, also one of 19 major cities in China and a city of national energyresources - heavy - chemical - industry base.Since the reform & opening, an obvious development has been madle by Taiyuan which 5 years ahead of time has realized the aim to double CDP in 2000. In 1998 GDP of Taiyuan amounted to 32. 8 billion yuan,which ranks the 23rd in 50 major cities of China. Taiyuan people are going to make greater efforis to huild this ancient city into a prosperous & modern one with the energyresources - heavy - chemical - industry - ori-ented base connected with high - tech. larger market and openness in the 2, 000.
