丹江口水库于1968年建成并蓄水发电,最高蓄水位时水库总面积124万亩,地跨豫鄂两省,其中河南省淅川县境内59万亩,湖北省丹江口市和郧县境内65万亩,为我国最大的人工湖。水库建成后,于1975年成立了淅川县水产局(其前身为香花渔牧场、淅川水产公司),为国有农业企业,生产经营鱼苗繁育、养鱼、捕鱼、养殖珍珠、造船制网、饲料、冷冻肉类、皮革、工业、林果、罐头等,以渔业为主,农工林牧综合发展。该局下属小企业12家,
