雷蒙德·卡佛作为美国20世纪后半叶最具影响力的作家之一,其短篇小说极具个性化色彩。其作品篇幅短小、语言简洁,常常大量运用省略、脱漏、无开头结尾、无表情的叙事、以人物对话代替故事情节的创作形式,因此被评论家冠以“极简主义”和“减法者”的头衔。《大教堂》这部小说集中,虽然卡佛说与以往小说比,更丰满了一些,文字变得更慷慨,但从中我们依然可以看到大量的“留白”技巧,而这正是卡佛小说魅力的独特所在。
