曾子名字音义如何,学界素有争论。自许慎以来,其参字的主流读法便是“森音”“所今切”(今读为shēn)。“骖音”“七南反”(今读为cān)是略晚出现的或然读法。二者之中孰为正读,历代学人训释颇多而往往失其本旨。实际上,曰“参”曰“舆”皆是表示天上的星宿之名,与宋世以降逐渐崛起的“骖乘”说并无关系。尤应指出的是,曾子名字之中还隐括了其出生之年的天文星象信息,不惟所涉音义问题可据此定谳,即使有关孔子、曾子生年的歧说,亦可以因之得一新证。
