The first major event of economic integration was the 19th century German Customs Union, which later realized complete economic integration through the unification of the German states established by the German Empire. The establishment of the Benelux Customs Union (1948) and later economic alliance (1949), including Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, in the 20th century represented the first step towards European economic integration. Followed by the European Coal and Steel Community (1953) and the European Economic Community (1958) was established. Both organizations include Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the Federal Republic of Germany.
