Recent developments in large area CCD imaging detectors and high speed microcomputers have prompted the United States Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to develop a new electro-optical tracking instrument. Designed with NASA’s common standards, these trackers aim at high accuracy and stability, with performance primarily determined by calculations and easily adapted to a variety of requirements. This article describes the test methods for CCD detectors in star trackers and the performance available with existing devices. Describe the principle of multi-function sensor, according to this principle, a single sensor can also be used for a variety of guidance. This paper also introduces software algorithms that extract effective guidance information from point images and extended images. Describe the CCD star tracker currently being developed by JPL and describe and discuss the performance data obtained during laboratory tests.
