OBJECTIVE: To establish an experimental model of Wistar rats with testicular injury (excision or cryptorchidism) on the contralateral testicular compensatory change (CTA). Methods: CTA was observed by light microscopy, electron microscopy and microscopic image analysis. Serum sex hormone levels were measured by radioimmunoassay to investigate the regulation and mechanism of endocrine changes. The fertility was evaluated by mating test. Results: The contralateral early testis weight, volume increased significantly, spermatogenic and non-spermatogenic cells hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and late (adult) testicular weight and volume increase relatively stopped, there are serious obstacles to sperm development; Serum FSH levels were significantly correlated with CTA; mating test did not show fertility changes, may be related to reproductive characteristics of rats, the limited number of mice and observation time is not long and other factors. Conclusion: The more severe testicular damage and early damage, the more obvious CTA, elevated serum FSH central CTA occurred, and prompted CTA may have some influence on fertility in rats.
