大自然造就了大三峡,大三峡的争流险滩,造就了三峡人,造成就了三峡船工,孕育了特色浓郁的三峡船工号子。西陵峡俗称峡江,长江三峡以西陵峡最险,而其中流经秭归境内的长江段更是险峻无比,从庙河至泄滩,崆岭滩、青滩、牛肝马肺峡、兵书宝剑峡,江面狭窄,水势陡急,暗礁险滩比比皆是,在旧社会,船工航行与峡江之间,犹如创过一道道鬼门关。为了战胜急流险滩,在这样的环境下创造出了具有峡江特色的内容丰富,风格独特的船工号子。表现了过去船工们坚强的意志和改造自然战胜自然的决心,更是千百年来屈乡人民劳动智慧的结晶。
