According to a report released by the United Nations Environment Program at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya recently, in 2002, the global losses due to natural disasters hit more than 56 billion U.S. dollars. According to the report, a total of 526 natural disasters hit the world in the past year, of which 195 occurred in Asia, 149 in the Americas, 99 in Europe, 45 in Oceania and 38 in Africa. These natural disasters caused a total economic loss of 56.4 billion U.S. dollars, of which Europe suffered the most serious loss reaching 33 billion U.S. dollars, followed by Asia and North America, reaching 14.8 billion U.S. dollars and 7.7 billion U.S. dollars respectively.
