Researchers at the Institute of Geochemistry of the Werners-Kazakh Institute of Soviet Sciences (Moscow) proposed a new means of predicting earthquakes. As the stress in the earth’s crust increases, the number of micro-fractures in the rock increases and the amount of gas released into the atmosphere through the micro-crevasses increases, altering the chemical composition of the groundwater. Through the continuous observation in the Republic of Tajikistan in the Soviet Union, the law of occurrence of such earthquake precursors has been fairly clearly confirmed. The first is that the helium content in groundwater starts to increase one and a half months to two months before the earthquake, from which the date of the earthquake can be estimated by the magnitude of 7-10 days.
