“我这辈子都无法抹掉青春期。”这是格斯·范·桑特在《大象》获得2003年戛纳电影节金棕榈奖时,面对媒体对自己执导电影所下的定语。在桑特的电影中,总是会出现俊美的少年、似乎永远没有尽头的道路和空茫而汹涌的天空流云。而这些梦魇般的场景,源于桑特对于青春期无限的读解欲望。1952年,桑特出生于美国的肯塔基州,因为父亲是旅行推销员,桑特便常年在美国甚至是墨西哥、欧洲等地辗转。这段“在路上”的童年生活,让桑特日后的电影中总是有一股飘泊不定的游离情绪。“我生长在旅行中,我时常会在16岁时就感到人生是灰暗和虚无的。旅行的状态是一个身处于边缘的状态,在城市中心静止的人无法体会,我当时身处生活的边缘,并且内心空旷得四下无人”。
