The debate between Archbishop Thomas Becket and King Henry II of Canterbury, England, took place during Pope Alexander III’s tenure. As a spiritual leader in the Christian world, Alexander played an important role in the debate. On the one hand, because of the long split of the Roman Church, Alexander struggled and needed the support of Henry and had to be cautious about the controversy. On the other hand, the papal authority was respected in England. Alexander and Beckett were basically in the position of safeguarding church freedom. Overall, he gave Beckett limited support, active mediation of the controversy, easing the tension between church freedom and secular politics, and maintaining the modest influence of Papal authority in England.
