A report recently declassified by the Directorate General of the United States budget acknowledged that the U.S. Department of Defense and arms manufacturers overstated the success rate of certain weapons systems used in air warfare in the Gulf War called “Desert Storm Operation: Air Campaign Assessment.” The report concluded that the success of the ongoing air war in the Gulf War “has benefited from the proper deployment of attack aircraft and support aircraft”, including from heavy bomber (eg B-52) to a precision guided munition platform like the F-117E stealth aircraft However, according to the report, the Department of Defense and several contractors overemphasize the role of stealth aircraft and laser-guided bombs as a factor in the success of the air campaign, while giving no due recognition to the role of those less-publicized systems For example, intelligence gathering aircraft, reconnaissance aircraft and offensive support aircraft, such as the EF-111 and EA-6B, “dispatched more than 50,000 aircraft sorties and was instrumental in the success of the air battle.”
