Optical velocity meter (Figure 1) has a strobe device. It is used to measure the surface flow rate of water in a open channel without any equipment immersed in the water. The instrument has a lightweight battery power supply. The optical flow meter consists of a low-power telescope, a set of rotary mirrors, a variable speed motor and a tachometer. When measuring the flow rate at one of the river’s measuring points, look down through the telescope at the flow meter and gradually increase the angular velocity of the rotating mirror.
