There are two seemingly contradictory interpretations of translation of the word “kitsch” in Chinese academia: “kitsch” and “meiya”. What kind of translation is more appropriate? The word comes from Milan Kundera’s “Unbearable Lightness in Life,” which Kundera refers to as “kitsch” which refers to the ubiquitous existence of mankind. Both Kundera himself and Chinese academia, the semantic choice of “kitsch ” is closely related to accepting the subject’s life experience and historical context. The words “kitsch” and “meiya” both contain, at the same time, the complete semantics of “kitsch”. “Kitsch ” is widely accepted, it reflects the meaning of “kitsch ” “bad taste ”, thus ignoring “Meiya ” self-flirting, sentimental Sex. In other words, the semantic choice of “kitsch ” in academic circles actually goes through a process of dislocation and regression relative to the complete semantics of “kitsch ”.
