The hypothermia affects the body’s tissue cells in various parts of the body. In order to maintain normal life activities, it is necessary to take in oxygen and nutrients from the blood for metabolism. Very early on, people observed that at different temperatures, the amount of oxygen needed by cells in order to maintain normal function was different. For example, if you need 100% at 37°C and only about 25% at 22°C, then only 3% at 6°C. In other words, the same amount of oxygen, if it can maintain the cell’s vital activity for 5 minutes at 37°C, can be maintained at 6°C for 160 minutes. This is due to the fact that metabolism slows down as the temperature decreases.
