禹是我国原始氏族社会末期生活在黄河中下游的氏族部落建立的部落联盟盟主。这个部落联盟,是以陶唐氏、有虞氏和夏后氏为主体建立的。担任联盟盟主的,最先是由陶唐氏的尧担任,其后是由有虞氏的舜担任,继之则是由夏后氏的禹担任。由于禹是夏后氏的代表人物,因此又称夏禹。盟主的继承实行“禅让”制。夏禹在我国历史上又被认为是夏王朝建立的开国之君。在夏禹担任部落联盟盟主之时,他在选择盟主继承人时,改部落联盟传统的“禅让”制为传子,开世袭制之端,夏王朝亦由此而建立,夏禹亦被认为是夏王朝的开国之君。但是,夏王朝的建立,在我国历史上虽有人认为是以夏禹为始,亦有人认为应以夏禹之子夏启为始。
