According to a research article in Sleep magazine in the United States, long or short sleep can affect the metabolism of abdominal fat. Researchers conducted a 5-year follow-up study of sleep time among 1,000 African-Hispanic adults. The results show that adults under 40 years of age, if the daily sleep less than 5 hours or more than 8 hours, abdominal fat will increase. The body mass index will also rise accordingly. However, the duration of sleep in people over the age of 40 is not significantly related to the amount of abdominal fat.
