U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline Security Office (OPS) manages the nationwide pipeline of natural gas, oil and other dangerous goods pipeline safety. Each state controls the above pipeline safety within the state. The legal basis for U.S. Department of Transportation administration is the two federal laws and one rule. The 1968 Natural Gas Pipeline Security Act authorizes the Department of Transportation to regulate the pipelines for the transport of natural gas and other gases and to regulate the transportation and storage of LNG. The 1979 Dangerous Liquid Pipeline Safety Act authorizes the Ministry of Transport to authorize the transport of dangerous liquids (crude oil, petroleum products, anhydrous ammonia, carbon dioxide).
