1986年,经上海市人大常委会审议通过,白玉兰被定为上海市花。白玉兰美丽大方,颇有海派的风韵和气质,与国际大都会的形象相得益彰。然而,在20世纪20年代末的上海市花评选活动中,棉花曾出人意料地被戴上“市花”的桂冠。这在现代人看来,几乎是难以置信的。毕竟,虽然棉花的名称里带有“花”字,但它的归属是农作物而不是观赏花。
In 1986, approved by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress, Magnolia was designated as Shanghai Flower. Magnolia beautiful and generous, quite Shanghai style and temperament, and the cosmopolitan image complement each other. However, at the Shanghai Flower Awards in the late 1920s, cotton was unexpectedly put on the title of “Flower City.” To modern people, this is almost unbelievable. After all, although cotton has the word “flower” in its name, it belonged to crops rather than ornamental flowers.
