《清史稿》载:“郎世宁,西洋人。康熙中入值,高宗(乾隆)尤赏异。凡名马,珍禽,异草。辄命图之,无不栩栩如生。设色奇丽,非秉贞等所及。”这样寥寥数语的记载,对于供职于康、雍、乾三代,创作了许多重要作品,以独特画风为清代院体画带来异域新风的郎世宁而言,可以说是相当怠慢了。事实上,在整个清代的宫廷绘画领域,郎世宁都堪为数一数二的重要画家。郎世宁是意大利人,原名朱塞佩·卡斯蒂里奥内(Giuseppe Castiglione),
