Objective To investigate the protective effect of electro-acupuncture on Neiguan acupoints against cardiovascular dysfunction caused by simulated weightlessness. Methods Fourteen healthy male volunteers were randomly divided into control group and EA group. In the control group, only the 4 d head-low bed rest was performed. The EA group was given bilateral “Neiguan acupuncture” electro-acupuncture stimulation for 30 min / d for 4 d. Bedside vertical position endurance, heart function, heart rate variability, and blood levels of angiotensin II and aldosterone were measured. Results Compared with those before bed rest, the control group had significantly lower standing endurance, systolic function, and LF / HF ratio (P <0.05). The levels of LF / HF, blood angiotensin and aldosterone in the EA group were significantly increased (P <0.05), and the stand-in stress decreased in the EA group (P> 0.05), but there was no significant change in the heart function before and after bed rest > 0.05). Conclusions The 4 d low bed rest may reduce the cardiac function and decrease the standing stamina. Electroacupuncture stimulation “Neiguan” can increase the excitability of sympathetic nerves and increase the release of blood angiotensin-aldosterone, thus effectively maintaining the heart function and standing endurance of the head-lordosis in bed.
