在論說性的文章裏往往有引語。不論什麽知識和事理,都只能是在別人或前人既得成就的基礎上發展创造出來的,这樣,吸收、繼承这些經驗就成爲必然的事。要使文章的論题具有很强的說服力,大家公認的文件及別人的某些言論和主張常常是有力的根據。这就要採用引語形式。引語在文章中的作用,概括起来說,是这樣: 爲了證实自己的判斷、結論或意見的正確,使讀者無可懷疑地相信,或者爲了强調自己的主張,预示它的必然性,使讀者不僅相信,而且能够付诸实践。伍修权同志一九五○年十一月二十八日在聯合國安全理事会上控诉美帝國主義侵略我國台灣的發言裏說:
There are often quotations in the argumentative essay.
