从元代三史编纂历程来看,袁桷是较早关注三史编纂的史家,无论是理论抑或实践,均有首创之功。袁桷的最大愿望是搜集资料,考订资料,曾编纂几部宋史资料集。袁桷对三史编纂作过认真的专业思考,《修辽金宋史搜访遗书条列事状》充分展示了他的史学思想。要求对宋史资料进行考辨,这是袁桷的高明之处,为后来官修《宋史》提供了理念与资料基础。
