在中国绘画史上,大写意人物画是一个晚熟的画种,它是在工笔人物画取得辉煌成就以后,才开始显露创造生机的。五代画家石恪将水墨法运用于人物画,开创了大写意人物画创作的新天地。之后,宋代梁楷进一步拓展了水墨写意的表现手法,创作出水墨淋漓、气韵生动的大写意作品,成为水墨大写意人物画发展的里程睥。然而在梁楷之后,大写意人物画一蹶不振,几成绝响。明清时期始有吴伟、张路、徐渭以及黄慎、任怕年等屈指可数的几位山水花鸟画家旁涉写意人物画,但是他们的创作仍缺乏恢弘气象。
