Sympathetic excitation or sympathetic amine infusion has been shown to cause transient systolic coronary artery pacing and the fact that coronary arteries have α-adrenergic receptors that vasoconstrict the blood vessels. However, due to the effects of myocardial metabolites on coronary dilatation and the direct vasodilation of coronary β receptors, the total effect of sympathetic nerve stimulation and sympathetic amine infusion is down-regulation of vascular resistance
