Electrocardiographic recording of myocardial action potential (AP) dates back to the end of the last century. In the middle of this century, the ventricular myocyte AP was first described by intracellular microelectrode technique. In 1952, Hodgkin and Huxley used voltage clamp technology to find that the change of membrane permeability to sodium and potassium was the main reason for AP. The ion theory replaces the membrane theory to explain the origin of bioelectricity. In recent years, many researchers have used voltage-clamp technology in conjunction with liquid-membrane ion-sensitive microelectrodes to study in greater depth the ventricular cell membrane potential levels for ion activity and ion currents.
