This article is an empirical study of the subheadings used in 100Chinese MA thesis introductions written in English.Through a careful analysis,it is revealed that the generic pattern of the subheadings chosen by Chinese MA students matches the macro-structure of the text functionally;however,as for the subheading types,most students prefer the generic one,showing that they did not attach much importance to the informative feature of the subheadings.This result will contribute to our understanding of the use of subheadings in research papers written by non-native novice writers,and to the guidance of them to form the subheadings appropriately in their English academic writing.
