约翰·厄普代克被公认为美国最优秀的小说家之一,他的文风对许多作家产生了巨大影响。他颇为明显的男权思想更是遭到了女权主义的猛烈抨击,甚至使他不得不在自己的创作中“自觉自愿”地按照女权主义的思想去写作。但在小说《分居》中,男性享受着女性为婚姻和家庭默默付出的一切,女性是叛逆、不成熟的、对家人冷淡、引诱男人背叛家庭和爱情的象征,女性在家中也没有发言权,可见作家其对女性的偏见和男权主义倾向。
